KCW (Kid's Clothes Sewing Week) Progress: Days 3 &4

Ahhh Friday, the last day of KCW. Of course things are moving slower than I want. BUT they are moving along nicely, better than what I really thought would happen.

On Wednesday and Thursday, I cut out most of the pieces to the Class Picnic blouse. This took way longer than usual because I am using a thrifted skirt and shirt for the fabric. The print is a wonderful equestrian themed print and the colors are perfect for fall. Just goes to show that thrifting consistently can yield great results...I found the skirt one week and almost 2 weeks after that I found the matching shirt! So  I have been carefully cutting out, trying to conserve as much fabric as possible and trying to make sure the print is going in the right direction. The only thing that is going to bother me about the blouse is that the print does not match at the seams, but I didnt have a lot of fabric to work with, so ohhhh well. Plus the person who constructed the garments didnt make sure the top and skirt fabric was sewn in the same direction for the print. (Does that make sense?) I was hoping to use more of the original hems, but I was able to use one original hem for the back of the blouse. Also had to use a seamed piece for the back, as there was not enough fabric to cut one solid unseamed piece. It is a mock flat felled seam, so its kinda cute. Thread is chosen and ready to go! Assembly line sewing tomorrow!
The Skippyjon cape is all cut and ready to be sewn. The directions on the pattern suck....they are "no sew" directions. Which is fine, but it would have been nice to have sewn directions too. Not that a cape is hard, but I might have to go and get some black bias tape or wide ribbon to "finish" the neck and front edges as I am too lazy to sew a tiny narrow hem on a costume.

The mouse costume....I dunno. I have the most gorgeous fabrics for it but my daughter looked really cute in a Princess tutu frufu whatchamacallit costume she was given and I might just save the beautiful pink velvet and the shiny grey silk for a dress, unrelated to Halloween.

Whew. So, are you sewing or what?!
I want to hear about it.

  1. I am in awe of those who sew. But, not me. Baking. That I can handle.

  2. Other than a few curtains requiring only straight seams, I quit sewing after home ec in 1976. Wish I could though!
