Books of the Week Volume 2

Welcome to Volume 2 of our Weekly Book Favorites.

Last week, I blogged about how I had started Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents by Christine Carter, Ph.D. Well friends, to be honest, the more I got into the book the more I realized it just was not for me. I made the decision not to finish the book, which was difficult BUT at the same time, my spare time is precious...So I decided to move in a different direction. I started reading a thrift find, One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd . It is a fictional account of a woman who is a bride to a Cheyenne Indian (and who was put into a mental institution by her family for loving someone of lower class than she before the whole bride thing). I love any sort of historical read. Great descriptions of the land that America was in 1875.

Mr. Z (4 years old): I just bought Hattie and the Fox at the thrift store as well. A fox approaches a hen, a cow, a sheep, a pig, a horse, a goose, and a cow. The only one who seems the slightest bit concerned is the hen! The illustrations are beautiful tissue paper collages, and there is wonderful, predictable repetition that my son loves and we have read this book a million times already!

Miss Penny (2 years old): She loves Hattie and the Fox too! It is great to have a book that ends up being a favorite of both children. She likes it especially for the animals' reactions to the hen's alarms of the fox. "Good grief!" "Well, well" "Who cares?"

  2. I actually wanted to start doing a monthly blog post about what I'm reading because I love reading other people's book list. This reminded to write that post.

Right now I'm reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan and I just finished The Maze Runner.

  5. I love seeing what others are reading. I want to say I have read that Raising Happiness book. But I read a lot of parenting books last year. None which I could get into or agree with. Im a rebel! lol. Hattie and the fox looks cute. I will add it to my list :)

  6. I love that you stopped reading it when you decided it wasn't worth it or a good fit for you. That's something I'm working on :)

  8. Great update! I love book shopping at thrift stores because of the true variety. I have restocked our night time reading with some great finds. My two and three year old are both loving "why should I share?" And "who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?" The last one has great rhyme and repetition! I even love it!
